Mercedes E63 AMG Estate takes the hugely practical E-Class Estate and adds the sensational performance and handling we expect from the AMG tuning division. Power comes from a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, and being the 'S' model which sends 579 bhp to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox. But the car is a wolf in sheep's clothing, with only a few details hinting at its enormous potential – although the sound from the quad exhausts gives the game away. The MCT Speedshift seven-speeed twin-clutch gearbox gives a choice of Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual modes, and provides lightning fast gearshifts. It covers 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds and hits a 155mph top speed effortlessly. The adaptive damping allows you to adjust the balance of ride and handling to suit the conditions – taking it from a refined motorway cruiser to a razor-sharp performance estate for B-road blasts at the flick of a switch.

Rock-solid body control, strong grip and well weighted steering inspire confidence the taut E-Class always feels planted and poised. Yet this agility doesn’t come at the expense of refinement. On the motorway there’s not much wind noise, while the engine settles down to a background hum. Simply a great great car!
