BMW X3
2.0 XDRIVE20D SE 5d 181 BHP
The X3 is a brilliant all-rounder. Whether on a winding B-road, muddy track or family holiday, it performs superbly. The X3 is capable of swift progress along a B-road, with a surprising amount of involvement for a big 4x4. The chassis feels balanced, body movement is really well marshalled, and there is a huge amount of confidence-inspiring grip in tight corners. In fact the X3 feels almost as sharp to drive as its sportier sibling, the X4. High praise indeed. This doesn't mean the X3 isn't efficient. Stop-start, regenerative braking and an eight-speed gearbox help the X3 to return 50.4mpg combined and emit only 149g/km of CO2. The eight-speed automatic transmission is superb; in manual mode it offers smooth, seamless changes. It's also worth noting than on the xDrive20d model the auto is actually more efficient than the manual. The X3 can also swallow 550 litres of luggage, and the huge rear doors mean plenty of space for rear passengers too.
